Taylor Harvey from Mad X Gym, Queensland, BIG 8 WKN World GP 2011 ImpressionFightmag.net interview with Australian muaythai super lightweight champion Taylor Harvey of Queensland who took part in the WKN Big-8 muaythai World GP in Belarus last month. The show will be broadcast by Eurosport NEXT WEEK on Thursday December 22.
Fightmag.net: How is it going after the fights at the Big-8? Fightmag.net: That was your second time participation in this tournament. Was there any particular difference between this and previous year? Fightmag.net: Tell us about your first fight versus turkish Erkan Varol? Coming into round 2 I knew his weakness and knew I had to be more agressive an busy so I took up the clinch and used dumping him on the canvis as a way to look more dominate towards the judges. I kept going foward Vitaly was telling me he wasn’t catching the body kicks I was throwing at him, so I used this to set myself to make him fight the way I wanted him to and try and save damaging my shins for the next fight. I just did the same thing in round 3 and by a minute or so in the round I knew that I was ahead and all I had to do was keep clinching, keep kicking and not get knocked out. I think that Erkan Varol is definately World class and had improved a lot since 2010. Fightmag.net: What has happened in the second with Ruslan Kushnirenko from Ukraine? Once I got into the ring I seemed to be calm and composed. The Ukrainian was looking like he didn’t take much damage in his first fight, even though he drew Samkor and had a hard fight too. He was switched on and obviously he trained hard and did all the right things in the gym for his preparation. I tried to stick to the plan and jab with my handicap arm (Smiling) and chop at his inside leg as he is a south paw. But we ended up in the clinch he was strong taller than me. I caught a knee in the liver went down and that was it. Kushnirenko went on to the finals with Andrei Kulebin but Andrei is on a different level to most fighters I have seen or fought. He is an 8 man machine and has competed in heaps of them.
Fightmag.net: Obviously your bout against the thai two weeks before Big-8 influenced on the result? Fightmag.net: Tell us about Belarus crowd at the show & people in general? Fightmag.net: Is there a major difference between muay thai promotions in Australia and Belarus? Fightmag.net: What is your personal opinion about Big-8? Fightmag.net: What is the most memorized from the Big-8 2011 in Belarus? Fightmag.net: Any coming fights booked yet? I’m interested in any fight any where. But it’s not something I’m going to chase in the near future, unless we will fight in Australia. I’v been travelling fighting a lot in the past 2 or 3 years so I plan to stay in Australia as much as possible in 2012 and remind everyone why I am the one who represents Australia in Big-8… And why I have been were I have today. There will be a lot of surprises in 2012 a specially for anybody fighting one of the boys from the gym. Fightmag.net: What is your plan for 2012? Fightmag.net: Thanks, Taylor, well done mate! We will keep working on more fights and wins to come. Tyson – You for being a big brother always being there for me in and out of the gym busting your ass to me fit and ready for Big-8, even though you got 3 beautiful kids, a wife and a life of your own. You still manage to train me twice a day. Also Wifey and my son, it sucks leaving you to go somewhere crazy and fight. My Mum and Aunty Gail my P.N.G Family and Trimz. And the last person – Paul Madigan – The man who took me in as his own son. I have put you threw a lot of stuff and, I mean, a lot of stuff. But through everything you stood by my side and continued to be my dad, and have taught me many lessons in life (even how to shave Smiling) and made me a man. So thank you for your love and generosity. With out you in my life I would most probably be in a pretty bad place. FIFTEEN QUESTIONS from BIG-8 MUAY THAI PROMOTION KINGS of MUAY THAI 1. I first started Thai boxing when i was 15 years old still at school . A couple of my friends were doing it as they had finished school an were a couple of years older than me i just stuck to it an trained for 6 months had my first fight when i was almost 16. I had a loss an suffered a broken rib an was stopped in the first round. 2. I train at the mad x gym wich is located in the Noosa hinterland (Black mountain). Which is owned an founded by Paul Madigan. 2. I had my first win at the Ettomogga pub on the Sunshine coast this was about 1 year after i had lost my first fight so i had trained for a long time an had trained hard it was Joe Hilton’s show I think in 2003 or 2004. 3. Before Muay Thai all through primary an high school i played basketball i was good to played for the state. 4. In Thai boxing there are so many contenders in this time especially in Thailand but i definitely am influence. by John Wayne Parr , Nathan Corbett , Aaron Leigh, Kurt Finlayson these Aussie champs you could say showed me that if you train hard you can beat these Thai boys at there own game. 5. Prob the most power full result fight with Andrei Kulebin and fighting for the World tittle even though I lost I still fought the current no.1 in Lumpinee. 6. I’ve dedicated 10 years into Muay Thai so i would never turn back now. Tho i have had a mma fight and would like to have a boxing fight in the future> 7. I had a lot of titles when i was a amateur but i am still waiting for a pro Australian title shot or another crack at a world tittle would be nice. But next i will fight with all the boys that wanna have a crack Micheal 300 wants a shot so he’ll prob be the first victim if the weight is right Toby Smith any body else who thinks they have what it takes (Big smile) but seriously . 8. I seem to be a strong puncher good elbower an come forward a lot an i can guarantee I will redeem my self in Australia in 2012 there will be a lot of changes for me as a fighter an for the mad x gym an all the boys there . 9. Ha ha no i don’t feel like a star of the sport i am just another fighter trying to get to the top an i am close an next year ill be there as the no.1 in this country in the welter weight division i just need to fight in Australia more an fight these Aussie’s and remove them from my path . an i will 10. I have no rivals ill give anyone the opportunity to fight me an try take my place . But they haven’t been were i have been a beat who i have or even fought some of the thai’s an eruopians that i have fought . 11. if my son wants to do Muay Thai that’s hes decision but i will not push him its a long hard lonely road . 12. i train about 4 to 5 hours a day wen i am 100 percent fight training 13. I am lucky to have Tyson Murphy and Paul Madigan to guide me in an out of the ring I couldn’t imagine live without these2 men. 14. I train with some of the best fighters in this country Eli Madigan Benihah Doumar we all push each other so it makes us all better fighters as the years roll on. 15. I will keep fighting until my body gives out your cant put age on when you will retire from your carreer. wayne parr was suppose to have hes retirement fight last year thai boxing is a passion we do it cuz we love it . Fightmag.net : When did you start muay thai and what brought you to the gym ? I trained everyday after school and 6 months later when I was 16 I had my first fight. It was a padded fight, no elbows. I think it was 3 x 1.5 min round . I got my ass whooped suffered to broken ribs and got stopped in the first round. About a year later I tried again an dished out an ass whooping it. Felt awesome! Then my next fight was a 5 round tittle fight. I won. so I just kept going and now I’m fighting on the biggest shows in the World against the best in the World. Fightmag.net : Tell us about your training process and your gym ? For the pro’s it’s training 2 times a day running, bag work, pads, grappling. Two weight sessions a week with Paul and two hard sparring session – normally 12 rounds each session – 300 sit ups and push ups… if I got anymore energy. I have an 18 months old son, so I spend the weekend with him. Though I train once on Friday and Saturday an have Sunday off. Fightmag.net : What are you favorite techniques ? Fightmag.net : In what countries have you fought and against who ? What was your the most exciting travel ? Fightmag.net : What would be the most memorized fight for you and why ? Fightmag.net : Who was the hardest, most technical opponent you have faced ? I did fight Jorm Promthept from Thailand this year, I’d say that was my hardest fight, as he was the same as against Kulebin, cause he also knew what I was doing before I did. But I guess that comes with the 430 fights he has had. (Laughing) Fightmag.net : Anybody in particular you would like to fight ? Fightmag.net : Tell us about your up-coming fight against Seanchai ? Fightmag.net : What is your final goal in this sport ? Fightmag.net : What do you do apart of muay thai fighting ? Fightmag.net : Thank you, Taylor. All the best in your sport career.
